Almost Broken: A Bold, Charming Display Font for Makers

There’s that moment—right after you’ve poured your third soy wax blend, wiped candle wax off your counter, and opened Illustrator to design the label—when you pause. You want something that feels handmade but intentional, strong but warm, modern but full of soul. That’s when Almost Broken landed in my font folder—and everything clicked.

Almost Broken is a modern display font with a bold, confident presence and surprising charm. It’s not aggressively edgy or coldly minimalist. Instead, it walks that lovely line between structured and expressive: clean lines with subtle imperfections, sharp angles softened by gentle curves, and a rhythm that feels both deliberate and human. The regular and slanted versions give just enough flexibility—slanted for playful energy on greeting cards or social graphics, regular for grounded impact on packaging or signage.

I first used Almost Broken on a set of small-batch candle labels. Not the main scent name—I kept that in a crisp sans serif—but for the tagline: “Hand-poured in Portland.” Just three words, but they carried weight. The font’s sturdy letterforms held up beautifully at 14 pt on a 2” x 1.5” sticker, and the slight irregularity in stroke contrast made it feel tactile, like something you’d sketch by hand before digitizing. No one mistook it for generic. It felt like *mine*.

It shines brightest where attention matters most: headlines, logotypes, and short, high-impact phrases. Think “Welcome Home” on a farmhouse-style wooden sign, “Just Married” on a wedding welcome board, or “You’re Invited” on a foil-stamped invitation suite. Because it’s a display font—not meant for paragraphs—it thrives in context where brevity is built-in. That means it works perfectly for boutique tags, mug decals, tote bag slogans, planner cover titles, printable wall art quotes, and seasonal digital downloads like holiday gift tags or Easter egg hunt clues.

Readability is thoughtful but not automatic. At very small sizes (under 10 pt), especially on thin stickers or narrow product tags, I test print first. On matte vinyl stickers? Great. On glossy shrink-wrap labels with tight curves? I’ll sometimes tighten letter spacing or nudge tracking by +10–+20 to keep rhythm clear. For Cricut or Silhouette users, I always convert text to outlines before exporting SVGs—Almost Broken’s clean vector paths cut cleanly, no jagged edges or unexpected gaps.

Pairing is where Almost Broken really sings. I often layer it over a neutral sans serif—think Montserrat Light or Inter Regular—for body text on greeting cards or packaging inserts. That contrast gives hierarchy without competition. For wedding stationery, I’ve paired it with a delicate script font for names or dates, letting Almost Broken anchor the structure while the script adds romance. With planner pages or printable wall art, a simple serif like Lora or PT Serif in the caption keeps things grounded and editorial.

What makes it feel like a true creative partner—not just another download—is how consistently it supports intention. When I designed a set of printable Mother’s Day cards, using Almost Broken for “You Are Loved” gave the phrase quiet strength. On a batch of lavender-scented soap labels, it turned “Small Batch • Cold Process” into a quiet manifesto. Even digitally, in listing mockups or Instagram story previews, it draws the eye without shouting—just a confident, warm presence.

Before using Almost Broken commercially—whether on physical goods, digital templates, or SVG files—I double-checked the license. It includes both OTF and WOFF formats, supports basic Latin characters (great for English-language shops), and allows commercial use for unlimited physical products and digital downloads—as long as the font itself isn’t resold or shared as a standalone file. No ligatures or swashes to manage, which keeps things smooth for quick-turnaround projects. Just clean, usable styles: regular and slanted, ready when inspiration strikes.

It’s also become part of my shop’s visual rhythm. Not every piece uses it—but when it does, customers notice. Not because it’s flashy, but because it feels *considered*. Like the stitching on a handmade tote, or the weight of quality cardstock—it quietly signals care. That perception matters. A well-chosen display font like Almost Broken doesn’t just say what something is; it says *how it feels to hold it, read it, give it, or live with it.*

For seasonal work, it’s been a go-to. Last fall, I used it for “Gather • Give • Glow” on a set of printable harvest-themed wall art—bold enough for framing, warm enough for cozy spaces. Over winter, it anchored “Cozy Season” on mug designs and “Warm Wishes” on holiday cards. And this spring? “Bloom Where You’re Planted” on seed packet labels—strong stems, soft curves, unmistakably alive.

If you’re choosing a display font for your next round of labels, cards, or digital printables, ask yourself: Does it reflect the heart of what you make? Does it stand out without overwhelming? Does it scale well across formats—from tiny sticker sheets to large-format wall art previews? Almost Broken answers yes to all three. It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence—with just enough character to feel real.

And honestly? That’s exactly what handmade is all about.
